Pickleball bracket generator: seeding, byes, and printable draws
A bracket is not a list of names in pairs - it is a specific arrangement that keeps the best sides apart until late and hands byes to the sides that earned them. Here's how it works, and a generator that builds and prints it for you.
Bracket size and byes
Brackets come in powers of two: 4, 8, 16, 32. If you have 11 sides, you build a 16-draw and the five empty slots become byes. Byes go to the top five seeds, who advance to round two without playing.
Never scatter byes randomly. A bye is a competitive advantage - a free round of rest - and awarding it to a low seed is the fastest way to lose a director's credibility.
Standard seed positions
An 8-draw fills its positions in the order 1, 8, 5, 4, 3, 6, 7, 2. That produces first-round matches of 1v8, 5v4, 3v6, and 7v2 - and, crucially, puts seeds 1 and 2 in opposite halves so they can only meet in the final. Larger brackets are built by mirroring the same pattern.

Advancement without guesswork
Every later-round slot should be defined by where its occupant comes from - "winner of round 1 match 3" - not by a name typed in ahead of time. Then a result advances the draw automatically, and a corrected score re-advances it correctly instead of leaving a stale name in a box.
Printing the draw
You still want paper: a bracket sheet for the score desk, court signs, and score slips players carry to the court. Print them black-on-white in a fixed layout that photocopies cleanly, and derive court numbers from the schedule rather than writing them on by hand.
